Hi guys, I am looking for a new tractor and have considered buying from a dealer because it seems as if every tractor on craigslist is overpriced. I really have no interest in buying locally from Rowan County. James River and Mid South are both over priced for used units. I am looking for a compact tractor with a front end loader. I have tractor experience and know many of the dealers in my area. I actually worked at a tractor supply store for seven years. I am just wondering if any of the dealer local to you have fair prices? I have also checked out tractor house.com and have found some pretty good deals but I am a bit worried about having it shipped. If you know of a local dealer with fair prices, less than 200 miles from salisbury, nc or know of a used tractor that fits my criteria that isn't too bad in price, please let me know. I am not looking to spend a fortune. I am basically looking for a 70's, 80's, even 90's model compact tractor that is mechanically sound. It doesn't have to be pretty because I'm putting it to work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The last tractor I picked up was from contacting Arnold at the John Deere dealership in Loris SC. It wasn't on his lot but he put me on it regardless and I saved quite a bit over another comparable tractor. John Deere 4wd, front end loader, etc. Quite a tractor for what I picked it up for. Had only 60 hrs and was like a demonstrator. No regrets at all.

Quality Equipment in Clinton has deals sometimes on tractors like you're looking for. I check out their website sometimes. Browse their used equipment sections. Links below:

Good luck on your tractor purchase.

I've been really pleased with the LS brand. Remotes, FEL etc.
One thing I know- shop for a good dealer/support network....brand/color is secondary.
Not being able to get parts is a big issue. Lots of orphaned brands out there.

What type of work do you have planned for it? HP?

I was on the way home from RCWA and saw one for sale. I dont remember exactly where it was, but I think it was on Millbridge Rd, between 150 & 152 on the west side of the road. It was a newer JD with a loader.

Sorry for the lack of specific location.
Funny you mention it, I actually pass that tractor everyday on my way to work. Sadly, I think they are asking $15k for it. I'm not looking for anything like that.

I plan on doing a bit of work to extend a small pond. I would also like to build a berm for shooting. There is also about 3 acres that will need a rotary cutter. We will also have a pretty large garden so a roto tiller will be necessary at some point.

Thanks for the information guys. I'm going to check out the links that you gave me. I will also considering contacting Arnold. I just took a look at the LS website as well. That may be an option. I really hadn't considered buying new but it may be my best option. I'm just trying to save as much cash as possible.

Be careful. Tractors are about as addictive as guns.
When you live in rural America.......... every man should have both! You can always sell them and get your money back.......

There are more brands than Kubota. Stay away from "novelty" brands such as Montana, Mahindra etc (nothing wrong with them, but not the best service and warranty). Case-IH, JD, Kubota, New Holland all make great tractors and dealer support wont be an issue.

What are you doing with the tractor, price range, HP level etc? In my college schooling (Ag Tech minor in Machinery) we had to pick tractors on certain criteria, so I'd be happy to help.

Back when I was looking for a compact tractor for our place, we got tired of looking for, as the Boss Lady put it, "buying someone else's trouble".
Ended up going to S.J. Black & Sons in Monroe and got a JD 970 and 60" mower. I think that model has a Kubota or Yanmar engine. That was on a Saturday. Stewart dropped the rig off on Monday, about three days before the financing was approved.

Whichever way you go, new or used, the important thing to go for is to make sure you don't end up buying someone else's trouble. That in itself kind of precludes buying used from an individual because an individual won't likely be willing or able to back you up with any existing problems.

Agreed,
I have a New Holland 1720 4 wheel dr. with front end loader. Stick with the major players and parts are always available from a variety of sources.

It uses a Yanmar diesel which is pretty common engine mfg in the small compact market.

When I bought my tractor new I went the other way, regarding major players and continuing support.
I went with a company from Tarboro that used to be called Long, then Farmtrac.
For thier compact tractors they used LS/LG made re-badged machines. Several other makers used the same machine, just painted a different color.
Montana, New Holland, McCormick and several others all used the same base machine. A few have options or loaders that were unique, but the actual tractor was the same.

Farmtrac and Montana have now gone under. However, the company that made the machines now sells the same tractor under thier own name (LS).

New Holland uses LS for thier compact tractors (under 40 HP)- boomer series?

Anyway, my point is...in the under 40HP catagory, you'll be hard pressed to find a "major player" who makes thier own tractor. Ag and utility tractors are a different story, but the small machines are almost always made overseas. My machine was made in South Korea and assembled in Tarboro.

Back to the LS brand....
My tractor uses a Mitsubishi diesel, awsome engine. Easy to maintain etc.
Fuel filters, oil filters etc, all are made by Wix and I can pick them up at any NAPA.
I got two sets of remotes, skid steer bucket and a ton of other options for the price of a bare bones "major name".
Even though the Farmtrac brand went under, the machine is still well supported.

This thread needs pictures.

My first tractor (Deere...Deer! get it?):

Notice the exit hole on the body. Good ole' 30-30 from my Marlin "Texan" with Skinner peep sights.
