Or tool box gun. While we all have a penchant for the more expensive guns there has to be a few good inexpensive guns out there, the kind you throw in the trunk or the tool box and forget about until you need it. I can't see dropping $500 on a Glock/1911/Sig just for what will be a back-up gun to my primary.
The spending limit is $200, new or used, what are your favorites?

$250 encourages me to spend a few bucks more for a quality used gun.
Pump shotgun would work for the car but won't fit in my toolbox until I upgrade to a larger roll-around.
I love the Bersa .380 and it is available at $200 used on several forums but something in 9mm would be preferable.

Next choice if size is a factor is a good solid .357 revolver. You should be able to find a used Rossi or Taurus for that price.

Any Hi Point pistol can be had new for less than $200 - .380, 9mm, .40, and .45. Could also get a Hi Point 995, which is a 9mm carbine for a trunk gun.

They are inexpensive, relatively low capacity for the size, and your friends may laugh at you, but they are accurate, reliable, and have a lifetime warranty.

If you really want to get down and dirty... I have purchased and cut down to legal minimum lengths cheap single shot shotguns. They are easily concealed and very nice little self defense weapons - cheap.

I'd tape a couple of extra shells to the stock and I felt well armed.

The purpose of a truck gun (trunk gun) is to have something moderately accessible that you cannot carry upon your person during normal daily business routine.

That is a rifle or a shotgun. A folding stock AK-47 is very compact and you'll likely never find yourself in a situation where you're outgunned with that. I know an officer that carries an underfolder AK-47 in a tennis racket case in his POV daily.

I've got both a HiPoint 9 and a Jennings NINE that I use for this purpose. They have both been good little guns. I bought the Jennings used from a friend for $40 with 5 magazines and a box of ammo. Since then, I have put 1800 rounds through it, and the only issue is an occasional failure to feed, and it won't feed hollow points either... but other than that, not a bad little gun, especially for the price.

Please tell me where you are getting AK-47s for $200 to $250!

I was attempting to set the OP on the course to the nature of a truck gun. A $200 price limit puts a used SKS into the mix, and with a folding stock, it is about the same size as an AKMS. For $200 you could have a cheap 12 gauge pump gun along with a Mosin Nagant rifle in your trunk, too.

The gun I keep in my car is in my glovebox and is an 8-shot .357 Magnum. My trunk used to house an AK or AR of some sort but lately the trunk has been getting used for all kinds of other crap.
