With all the tacticool stuff people bolt to ARs, why aren't we seeing more of the 37mm flare launchers? Are they illegal in NC? (or everywhere now)?

Yep. There's also the 26.5mm Czech flare guns, which can also do smoke, though both gun and ammo seem to have gotten harder to find.
I impulse bought this set pretty cheap at the Reno gun show a while back. Haven't figured out where to try it and I wouldn't want to bust up the set in the pouch actually (which is why I got the extra box of what I think are the single white flares). I suspect the flares are 1 red flare, 3 red flares, 1 white flare, or smoke (blue).

You'd be right. I've never seen the single white before. For the smoke be thinking marking and not concealment. Also, give a parachute illumination a try someday, just don't set the field on fire.

OK, so I'm thinking about buying a 37mm launcher. Not the type that attaches to the gun, but a stand alone. Either a boat type like the Olin brand pistol, or a mil surplus metal one, or something like this:

Any suggestions among the various choices?

Also, I know smoke and light flares are legal. But I'm not clear on CS or OC flares. Are they legal for non-LE?
