I want to reload some 200gr Lead Round Nose bullets using Unique powder, but am having a hard time finding data. Looking in the Lyman 49th edition, there is nothing specific to this round. After doing some studying, I am thinking 6 grains of unique. 6 is about middle of the road for all the load data I have in the Lyman book.

What do you guys think?

I also think, I should go out and buy some FMJ bullets, that match the charts in my book, or find another book that covers this.

This guy thinks you should wait for some sound advice from someone who knows that load and a book that covers what you are looking for... Play it SAFE ! All my books are it the shop and i'm in for the night, (It's dark out there) But i think they only cover 185's and 230 gr loads... Even the books can be way off, I have the Lyman 45th and 48th edition, big differance between the two, So i just stick to my pet loads. Remember "SAFE" is better then your friends seeing your name in the paper.. Good Luck. P.S. If you don't have a lot of the 200gr. Try the 185gr. LSWC or the good old 230gr. RNHC. <- Thats all i use...

I have loaded a lot of .45/200grn.. but I use WW231. I tried Unique in the early days and found that it's performance was acceptable but it was very dirty and smokey..At 6 grns you will be ok..velocity of 800 to 850 fps from a 5" 1911. You might want to try a different powder later if you find what I say is true for you as it was for me.
Lots of luck.

More than anything I just want to make sure I am being safe, so am being very cautious.

The Lyman book shows data for a 200gr flat nose lead bullet with a OAL of 1.235 using that load. THen another flat nose bullet with 2 gas checks with a OAL of 1.161 using 5 grains.

I will probably just sit down with one of the guys at the CR-PC that reload and talk it over tomorrow night. No rush, as I have no bullets yet. Just powder, primer, and brass.... Bullets on the way.

Six grains of Unique is my go-to load for .45 ACP with 200 cast LSWC and 230 LRN, and it duplicates USGI-spec hardball with 230 jacketed RN bullets.
I can echo this load information and it works well for me also. However, years ago I switched powders for my lead 200gr SWC and RNFP. I started using 5.0gr of WSL and the accuracy with both bullets is the best I have ever tried. WSL is no longer produced and sold. You might look for data using Titegroup as another powder choice.

".in the Lyman 49th edition, there is nothing specific to this round.."

If you mean they don't list that exact bullet it means nothing. All loading data is generic by powder type and bullet weight.

Such things as book OAL are NOT critical unless you grossly change it, seat to the crimping groove and, if it feeds and chambers, use it.

Per the Lyman Book, 45th edition; 200gr. Cast, #2 alloy, #452460, Unique.. Starting load (5.0gr.) 752 FPS "TO MAX" (7.2gr.) 1041 FPS (The Accuracy load is Bullseye (3.5gr.) 731 FPS) This is from a older book, and it's not in my new one, Please check it out befor using, if not start on the low side... I would say "Red Hat" is on the money, GOOD LUCK, B Safe! My pet load is the 230gr. RNHC, pushed by 3.5 grs. of Bullseye with WLP primers or Remington 2 1/2.... That load works in everything i have from a 3" to my Tommy... Once again, B-Safe. :eek:hmy:
