These are great people and very helpful..I have talked with them, John, a couple of times. They are stright up.
Depending on what you need and to what expence you want to go you can get get good stuff from Bob at FusionFirearms. They also do a lot of the heavy custom work on the gun befor you get it and that saves you a lot of dough!

Kemulwee, I too have often thought of building a 1911 from a kit. So far I have a handful of small parts such as GI beaver tails, hammers, and mainspring housings. My intent is to build a 1911 that resembles the GI pistol. I once owned and foolishly sold my Remington-Rand 1911A1 to a good friend who still owns it. I still plan to get a complete GI slide assembly and continue. I have found that Sarco has unfinished (80% machined) frames for decent prices published in Shotgun News. I am taking this approach with the frame since I have the machinery to finish a frame and hopefully with a little help, the knowledge to fit the slide to the frame. The pupose of the build is to gain knowledge and experience on gunsmithing. I also like the simplicity of the earlier Colt .45's. I hear Essex makes a decent frame to start with and they can be found on gunbroker from time to time. I have often been discouraged from building a .45 by friends because they insist a current production .45 such as a Rock Island Armoury 1911 can be had for less than what it would cost to buy all the neccessary parts plus labor. To me, it's not about money. I personally enjoy a good challenge and I feel that building a 1911 will present me with just that. I encourage you to follow your heart no matter what other people think. Be sure to ask alot of questions. There are folks on this site such as 1911Tuner that are very knowledgeable. Good luck with your project.
