PHA is a members club. If you can hook up with a member you can go as a guest as often as it can be arranged. The initiation fee and dues are pretty high, but the range has a lot to offer...so you definitely get your money's worth if you're an active shooter. Not so much if you're an occasional shooter.
One of the reasons for the high expense is that they want to limit the membership to the people who are active and want to be involved with various club activities such as staged and sanctioned matches...meet and greet cleanup days...with an informal shootin' match and the burger'n'dog burn over charcoal that comes with it...and of course, they have cowboy shoots where everybody dresses up to play let's pretend that we're old west desperadoes shootin' up Dodge City on a Saturday night.
They learned a hard lesson by handing out cheap memberships a few years back. Slob shooters swept in and shot up range equipment...roofs over the shooting areas...chairs and benches...and some of them took whatever wasnt nailed down if they felt that they had a need for it. Another problem was overcrowded ranges on weekends, with so many people to keep an eye on, that they had to appoint a RO to be present all day on Saturdays and Sundays. When it reached the point that it was a 7-day a week requirement...they started to reign it in, and started taking in new members only as they lost them, requiring sponsorship from an existing member. The sponsorship requirement has been relaxed and you can now apply by simply showing up at a monthly club meeting and shaking a few hands. Unless they're at their limit...ya pay your money and go shoot.
Like I said. PHA has a lot to offer if those things are your cuppa tea. You can also use the range seven days a week, from sunup 'til sundown...all by your lonesome if you like. 100 and 200 yard rifle ranges with concrete benches and covered shooting areas. Falling plate machines with pneumatic plate reset. Steel plates and pepper poppers...and you name it.
The range rules are fairly relaxed, but the officers are serious about them, and they're strictly enforced. Mostly common sense and common decency stuff that's not difficult to understand and follow. Let the wrong man see you shoot something that isn't meant to be shot, and you're outta there for good with a promise to press charges for tresspass if you're seen on the property again. Food and drink are welcome, but if you bring a cooler...don't pack Long Neck Buds for the outing. Alcohol consumption is one of the biggest no-can-dos for obvious reasons.
I've been a member for 20 years, and it's been a completely good experience for me. Follow the rules and it will be for you.
