where is a good place to buy an authentic GI-issue 1911 (nothing fancy, just a decent gun) and how much should one expect to pay? I'd be cool with anything from a WWII-Vietnam era piece.

I love this gun. I cannot miss no matter the ammo, position, whatever, it's like when you're a kid pointing your finger yelling "pew! pew!".

You can try gunbroker but your best bet would be a gun show. Find a collector to buy from but I would advise taking a reference book or a friend that can verify the authenticity. You have to be careful with what you buy to be sure the pistol is what it is listed as.

Depending on what you go for you can spend anywhere from $1000 to $10000.
